What is the purpose of a drain valve in a lubrication system?

To remove water and sediment from the reservoir and bottom of the tank.

The drain valve is there to remove water and sediment that collect at the bottom of the lubrication reservoir. Water can enter the system from condensation or leaks and settles at the low point, while dirt and wear debris form sediment that can clog passages and wear components. Draining these contaminants helps keep the oil clean, maintain proper lubrication, and protect pumps, bearings, and filters from damage. The drain is specifically for removing those accumulated fluids and solids, not for venting air, adding lubricant, or measuring temperature. Venting air uses a vent or breather, adding lubricant uses a fill or supply port, and temperature is measured with a sensor or thermometer.

To vent air during operations.

To add extra lubricant.

To measure temperature.
